William Clarke Wilkie (born 1814) was born in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, in 1814, the son of Daniel MacQueen Wilkie. He received his early education privately at Haddingtonshire School in East Lothian. Continuing his education at the university level, he was admitted as a sizar at St John's College on July 4, 1833, at the age of 19, though he did not reside there. Shortly after, on October 11, 1833, he was admitted as a pensioner to Queens' College and matriculated in the Michaelmas term of 1833. He later migrated to Trinity College on March 22, 1834, at the age of 19. He was a member of the Cambridge Apostles.
